Tesla Model 3 Performance: the Tesla Track Car

Tesla Model 3 Performance

The Model 3 Performance is the top-end version of Tesla's "entry-level luxury car" offering.  The price for this top-level offering starts at $64,000, with a fully-loaded version coming in at $80,500.  The specs for the Model 3 Performance are amazing.  It's advertised to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.5s.  Top speed is 155 mph.  And yet, it still has a 310 mile range, which you just can't find in any other EV (save for other, more expensive Teslas).

Tesla Model 3 Performance: Real World Acceleration

Tesla advertises 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds.  But what does it do in the real world?  How does 3.12 seconds sound to you? (NOTE: after clicking on the picture to start the video, click on the "Full Screen" button in the lower-right corner for a better view.  Use your ESC key to exit full-screen when you're done watching).

That was a single car, and probably ideal conditions.  But it's easy to find other videos where people were able to get runs of about the same time.  And remember, all of these runs were on street tires.  Some of them are even using the base 18" wheels with the efficiency-minded Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires.

Tesla Model 3 Performance: Drag Racing

The Tesla Model S P100D is still the drag racing king, but the Tesla Model 3 Performance is a pretty good drag racing car as well.  Here's a Tesla Model 3 Performance (racing a RWD Tesla Model 3) running a quarter-mile in 11.795 seconds at 113.55 mph.  And once again, this is on the standard Michelin tires.  This 11-second car will run even faster with stickier rubber.

Here's a Tesla Model 3 Performance racing against a bonifide sports car: a McLaren 570s. The Model 3 Performance run an 11.785s quarter mile at 115.35 mph.  For comparison, that McLaren had a run of 11.577s.  The Tesla Model 3 Performance is in some elite company!

Tesla Model 3 Performance: Track Racing!

If you opt for the "Performance Upgrade" option when configuring a Tesla Model 3 Performance, you'll get a car that's made for racing.  It includes 20" wheels with more performance-oriented rubber, as well as upgraded brakes (with beautiful red calipers) to handle the abuse of racing.  Elon Musk has announced that Tesla is developing a "Track Mode" for the Tesla Model 3 Performance that will allow the driver to dial back the automated safety systems to allow the full use of the car's abilities on a track.

I have not yet located a good video of a Tesla Model 3 Performance racing on a track.  But a normal RWD Tesla Model 3 was able to run Laguna Seca in 1:48.6.  A Porsche Cayman ran this track in 1:47.  Imagine how well the more-powerful and better-braked Tesla Model 3 Performance will perform on a track!

Tesla Model 3 Performance: Drifting!

Another benefit of the Track Mode is to allow some sweet drifting!
